One of my favorite childhood memories is being in my Grandfather’s workshop making jigsaw puzzles. I was so engaged in what I was creating that I was not aware of time. Years later, I learned that I was in “flow state” – total immersion in the present moment.
I am grateful to have maintained this early interest in puzzle making and woodworking throughout my lifetime. And I am happy at this point to combine those interests with my talents as both a photographer and dentist. My photographic experience has provided me with skills in composition, color selection, and abstraction while my dental background has enabled me to manipulate many kinds of materials and create strong and durable works of art.
In addition to my life as a woodworker, photographer, and dentist, I am also a musician and have played French horn with the La Jolla Symphony & Chorus since 1999. I also love to listen to music while working in my shop – jazz, classical, rock & roll, and world music. As with all that I do, I look for cross-fertilization of ideas and find that having studied music composition helps me enhance the complexity in all my creations.
I have gained many insights over the years that influence my art. Many of my ideas have come from visiting museums and meeting people while traveling and living overseas. I admire numerous visual and musical artists, including Louise Nevelson, Henry Moore, Max Bill, Pablo Picasso, Leonard Bernstein, and Mary Cassatt, because of their masterful use of color, composition, and form. In addition, due to my considerable interest in brain function and improving cognitive ability, I have designed my puzzles to both engage the mind and promote cooperative effort: two or more people working together as a team can assemble them.
Over the years, I have heard many compliments on the beauty, ingenuity, and craftsmanship in my creations. So, I am pleased at this point in my life to present these on this website and at the La Jolla Farmers Market. By creating opportunities to show my work to the world, I honor the gift of life.
